Over the years people used a lot of different things as a currency. Even pieces of rock were once used to serve the purpose. As with any currency, it would only have value in relation to what you can buy with it. For a currency to work, it needs to derive its value from efficiency and mainstream use. 

This is beginning to happen now with various online stores accepting Bitcoins and other cryptocurrencies as payment.

I think the future will involve a balance of fiat and crypto currencies.
